Confused about flea treatment when you own a dog and a cat?

I have a dog and a cat. Both are regularly treated with Effipro. Does the dog’s flea treatment kill any cat fleas that might go on him?
So if the cat picks up a flea outside and the flea gets on the dog before it is killed by the cat’s flea treatment can it live on the dog? From what I know dog and cat fleas need different treatment.

The product you mention is based on Fipronyl, which is a great ingredient for killing fleas. Continued, monthly use of it on both your dog and cat should keep problems with fleas away.

If your cat picks up a flea, that flea will most likely live out its life on the cat. Fleas do not generally hop from one host to another. What happens is that they lay eggs in the hair coat. These eggs roll off into the environment, go through several stages, and then emerge into adults, which do leap up on your pets. And if there are no pets, they can leap up onto you.

I am not personally familiar with Effipro; however, I am familiar with fipronyl. It’s the ingredient in the product I use, Frontline Plus. The other ingredients are probably different from Frontline’s.

This product has packages for dogs and for cats. Use the appropriate kind on your pets. With the fipronyl products, a flea doesn’t have to bite to die. It is killed by crawling through the hair coat. The product stays in the oil glands — which is why you shouldn’t bathe right before nor after putting on the product (about 48 hours.)

Most fleas are actually the “cat flea.” They love all animals with fur or hair, including squirrels, rabbits, and deer!
